I love finding out about new designers and being able to tell you guys about it. Seriously, I could just live in the bridal fashion world..all day, everyday! Today, I’m excited to feature Lagos based Athaena Bride..who’s designs had me at HELLO when I saw them on Instagram. Think Greek Goddess (because every bride is a Goddess right?), fine silk and delicate hand stitched embroidery. I had the pleasure to catch up with founder, Rhoda Ejiga and get her expert insight into bridal fashion.
CBB: Tell me more about your business and how you got started?
I have always loved clothes – from a young age. I grew up on old Hollywood movies such as Sabrina and My Fair Lady that starred Audrey Hepburn where she was glamorously attired. I think I caught the bug then. I wanted to look like her and thought everyone should as well! Later, when I was in university in 2001, I spent a summer holiday working for the fashion house Karen Millen in London. That was when it hit me that I could work in the fashion industry. The preference for bridal started in 2004 when I helped my best friend design her wedding and bridesmaids’ dresses. I enrolled in Fashion College to do a course in 2006 and have been doing this since.
CBB: What’s the inspiration behind your latest collection?
Greek mythology. The deities led interesting lives and my favourite is Athena daughter of Zeus. I like that her approach to situations were thoughtful, graceful, and wise. She is also a patron of the arts and crafts. Clean lines, drapery, embroidery and embellishments are key features of the collection.
Do you make custom gowns?
Yes we do. However if you do not find your dress from the existing collection, we are more than happy to sit with you to realize your dream gown. All our gowns are made to measure and handmade in our studios so the fit is perfect for your big day. The patterns, fabrics, embroidery are all carefully selected by us.
Do you work with brides in the U.S.?
Yes we do. Our brides come from all over the globe. And we are all so busy these days so we make use of technology and the online tools available to us today –email, Skype, Whatsapp, Facetime etc. We have the luxury of being flexible. We can consult, interact, and take measurements without having to physically meet. The experience will be slightly different vs. coming into the studio of course but you will feel just as special and wonderful and the quality of your Athaena gown remains the same. We make couture for the digital age.
