Happy Monday Beautiful People!! As women of color it’s often hard to find skin care and beauty products that actually compliment our skin, nail and hair. There are several brands specific towards women of color but you still want to know what works without spending an arm and a leg. Karif Beauty is a new beauty subscription service dedicated to women of color. Each box contains several different products from hair care to nail care designed with the women of color in mind. Check out this Q & A with Elsa, founder of Karif Beauty.
CBB: Tell me more about your company and how you got started?
I would be happy to! KARIF is a beauty subscription service facilitating the discovery of new and innovative hair, skin and beauty products created with women of color in mind. The idea to begin KARIF came to me one September afternoon while surfing the web to gain insight into makeup that would work on me. I had personally stayed away from delving into the confusing world of finding makeup. I was always attracted to the beauty section of my local drugstore and really loved to enter Sephora with my homies (girlfriends) but seeing all those beauty options would cause my head to hurt.
I knew I wasn’t the only one feeling like she was drowning in a sea of options so I decided to design a service where women could receive beauty products catering to their wants and needs. Not only is KARIF designed to eliminate the headache when finding new products but also to equip our subscribers with quality advice and tips to help them achieve their best possible looks.
In essence, I sought out to create a beauty subscription service that doesn’t just end with monthly beauty boxes but adds value to subscribers daily. Plus its fun.
CBB: Where did the name KARIF come from?
I get this question all the time because KARIF is such an unusual name. The word “Karif” originates from the word used to call the cultural mixture of Arawakan Indians and African captives that took place on the island of St. Vincent. Now known as the Garifuna people of Central America, the Karif people were removed by British and deported to the coasts of Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Belize where they built their own communities.
Being that I belong to this culture, I thought that naming my company KARIF was befitting in homage to my ancestors and I also felt like the term KARIF was the embodiment of the mix of all of our cultures — whether your Latin American, Caribbean, African, etc — and it is the understanding that we are all beautiful.
CBB: What makes your beauty subscription service different from others?
With KARIF the service doesn’t end at a specific time of the month. We offer beauty daily.
CBB: Do you think brides will find this service useful?
Brides would find KARIF most useful because it eliminates the guess work of finding the right beauty products for their big day. We know that a lot goes into preparing for a wedding and providing brides with trustworthy advice and insights takes away a lot of the anxiety. Brides can subscribe to receive expert advice on diverse “looks” they can employ on their wedding day, or choose a KARIF Beauty expert that would do the work for them. With KARIF, it’s all about choices and what works best for you.
CBB: Why is a subscription service like this important for women of color?
It is so important that women of color have a strong and robust beauty subscription service to assist them in the beautifying process. This is mostly because it is sort of difficult to find products that work for us from large cosmetic brands and also because of the rising of new brands that are designed specifically for women of color. Women of color find themselves facing a new dilemma on this front. KARIF intends to simplify the complexity of finding products and bring subscribers piece of mind.
CBB: What inspires you?
I might sound cheesy but I’ve gotta be honest: my customers. I find my customers to be highly inspirational because I learn a lot from them. I don’t know all there is to know about beauty, so I really appreciate it when I can learn something new from our growing community on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, or when I receive the occasional “thank you” email from someone who has fallen in love with KARIF. Their feedback and support truly keep me going.
CBB: What’s next for your company?
What’s next? A lot, really! We’re currently preparing for our post-launch event which will take place on August 2nd in Harlem, New York! Our launch event will feature an afternoon of beauty transformations and alcoholic beverages! We invite every one to join us! It will be EPIC. Also, we’re excited about our 2nd photo shoot coming up. Yep, there’s a lot going on and so little time!
These are just for fun:
Coke or Pepsi?
What’s the name of the last book you read?
Pitch Anything by Orlen Klaff
Dogs or cats?
Must have beauty product?
Oh, this is a toughy! It would have to be good eyeliner and mascara. I use any brand. I can’t live without those two!
