A Classic Wedding at the Belo Mansion by David Loi Studios

April 5, 2017 by Danielle Leave a Comment

There’s nothing like a classic wedding! Especially when you’re able to infuse your own personal touches into it. Today’s wedding did just that, and here’s something you can’t see from the pictures: It was important for the bride, Tamara to include her grandfather’s wishes for the music selection. Having had conducted major orchestras in the US and across Europe, clearly he knew good music. In fact, he was the first African-American to conduct a major orchestra below the Mason Dixon line, when he was asked to conduct the Louisville Symphony in 1953.  With a story like that we only wish we could have been there to hear the music in person, but for now we’ll hum along to the pictures below.

Classic & Cultural Alberta Wedding by Daphne Chen Photography

November 23, 2016 by Danielle Leave a Comment

Happy Wedding Wednesday!! Julie & Kevin met while in high school, but the two didn’t officially start dating till later. Their lovely wedding was captured by Daphne Chen Photography, in Alberta, Canada. It was important that they were surrounded by family and friends as well as to incorporate Julie’s Trinidadian and Ghanaian culture.  Take a look below and be inspired and be sure to check out their wedding trailer at the end!

From the Photographer:

Julie and Kevin met in Edmonton during High School. Some like to call us High School sweethearts, although they didn’t start their relationship until they entered University. It was important to them to host the wedding in their vibrant hometown, surrounded by their community, family and friends. Julie and Kevin’s vision was to have a traditional wedding (church ceremony, reception, dance party) that had a mix of cultural elements. With Julie’s mother from Trinidad and father from Ghana, they were thrilled to include Caribbean dancers and African drummers as part of their celebration. The bride explains: “While most couples compete with other wedding hopefuls for their desired ceremony venue, we had a more unique competition. Because of the arts-centric city that we live in and the time of year, our ceremony had to finish (and more importantly start) on time in order to not interfere with a theatre performance. The annual Fringe Theatre Festival just happened to choose the date and location of our ceremony to host one of their performances. I recall seeing the lineup of theatre goers standing in confusion as we left our ceremony. Certainly they wondered whether they were witnessing true love, or some elaborate outdoor theatre performance, complete with 200 extras. It was true love.”The historic clinker-brick church (sometime theatre venue) served as a perfect backdrop for the elegant ceremony. It was brought to life by the bright stained glass windows and the energy of the people inside. In perfect juxtaposition to the church, City Hall’s modern stone, steel, and glass was used for the wedding party’s photo-op.The flawless wedding day had only one small hiccup. The groom recalls: “I remember it was hot. I was waiting at the front of the century-old church, in my tux, no air conditioning, and one table fan pointed at my face. The ceremony was supposed to start at 2:00. I looked at my swatch, it was 2:00. I had heard the limo had broken down and was now running late. I didn’t worry however because I knew Julie would do enough worrying for the both of us.”The event filled reception featured Caribbean dancers, African drummers, an intimate first dance, and a beautiful traditional Ghanaian dress.  The entire day was a perfect reflection of the couple’s eclectic yet classic style and celebrated how best friends found true love.”

A Classic Wedding with African Flair by Foster Ambitions Photography

July 22, 2015 by Danielle 1 Comment

If you’re a regular here at Chic Brown Bride then you’ll remember Patrice & Rasheem’s engagement session from a few months ago and these two were definitely looking like a million bucks. I couldn’t wait to see the wedding as I knew Patrice was hoping to incorporate some traditional African flair to her elegant and classic wedding. She hit the nail on the head and once again the work of Derrell from Foster Ambitions Photography was superb.

From the Bride:

“We wanted a wedding that displayed an African flair while exhibiting a sense of classic elegance. Our goal was simple, incorporate details that gave a nod to culture and blend it with our New Jersey roots by hosting it in our hometown among our closest family and friends. In honor of tradition we took part in a “Tasting of the Elements” ceremony to demonstrate a commitment to remaining together no matter what life may bring. In lieu of jumping the broom we “tied the knot” with Kente cloth to illustrate our unity.  Our wedding day was filled with so many memorable moments that we will cherish forever. Looking back, what made our wedding extra special was Rasheem’s grandmother, who was battling cancer, got to see her grandson get married before passing  away three weeks later.”
