So today’s Travel Tuesday feature has a bit of a twist! It’s travel and love all mixed in one. I first read about Shaunte & Antoine on The Root.com and I was just smitten with their story. These two love birds met, fell in love and got engaged! But instead of a traditional engagement party the avid travelers decided to take their love on the road to family & friends. Read on below about how the love of travel has brought closer together as a couple.
Tell me how you two met? Antoine and I met in 1997, when we were in college at a party for Hampton Homecoming. He was attending school in Boston (Boston College) and I was attending school in Norfolk, VA (Old Dominion University). He saw me (Shaunte) and was determined to get my number before the night was over.
Who’s idea was it to take your engagement on the road? Antoine is very social. He wanted to throw a big engagement party for all of our friends (who live all over the country). However, asking our friends to travel for an engagement party, bachelor/ette parties, and the wedding seemed like a lot. So I brought up the idea of going to them. Voila.
How has traveling together created a special bond between the two of you? Traveling together creates memories that are priceless. We have moments, that only we two share and at any time we can reminisce and laugh while one of us says “remember that time when…”.
When you are in a country where you know no one but the person you are with, you have to depend on each other. When you are in a place where no one speaks your language, you realize how important it is for you two to communicate to each other effectively. We’ve missed trains and planes and have been stuck in foreign cities having to figure out how to get home. Making it through obstacles created a bond and it says that we can make it through anything together.
Name some of your favorite places to travel to? We want to see the world, so each trip is to somewhere new. We both love beaches, culture, history, great food and good music. Naturally the Caribbean, South America and the Mediterranean are great matches for us. Antoine wants to see all 7 world wonders. He has been to six (6,) Chichen Itza, Machu Picchu, Christ the Redeemer, The Colisseum, The Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China. Petra in Jordan is next!
Where will your wedding take place? The wedding will take place in Norfolk, VA (the city we met in). It will be a travel-themed wedding at the Chrysler Museum of Art, which showcases artifacts from around the world.
What advice will you give to couples who are about to embark on their first trip together? Be patient, be open and flexible. Don’t expect everything to go as planned. If you’re just dating, this is a great opportunity to see how each other handles challenges and obstacles. Prior to traveling discuss what you want to do on the trip and agree on a loose itinerary and activities. You don’t want to get there and find out that one person loves museums and the other doesn’t. Put the other person’s needs first and you will both be rewarded!
