Hello beautiful people! OK so I am going to just go on out and say it..I don’t know anything about flowers! I love them..they look absolutely beautiful but when it comes to what’s in or what’s out..I have no clue. That’s what I leave to the experts! Today, I have Afua with Afmena Events who will be shedding some light on her UK based venue styling and floral design business.
Tell me more about your floral design business and what you do?
We are Afmena Events and we specialise in floral design (floral arrangements, bouquets, buttonholes etc) and Venue Styling. Our Venue Styling often incorporates floral arrangements that we have designed as part of the guest table centerpiece feature.
What are some things to consider when choosing floral arrangements for your wedding?
You must first be sure that the flowers you want are in season at the time of your wedding. It also helps to make sure that your flowers suit the overall theme of your wedding, be it vintage or tropical for example. Finally, ensure that the arrangements are tastefully done. I have seen far too many brides who have bouquets which overpower their dress either with the size or design.
Name some trends you see in floral design?
Bling bouquets are very fashionable at the moment, and bouquets with lots of bling features be it in the actual floral arrangement or the bouquet handle. I’m also seeing hydrangeas everywhere! They are becoming very popular because they are such large headed flowers and they therefore fill floral arrangements quite nicely. Orchids are also a classic favourite.
What are some benefits to using artificial flowers at a wedding?
There isn’t the possibility of browning and wilting or easy damage to the flowers. Premature wilting may need to be considered if you are getting married on a particularly hot day. Artificial flowers can also be manipulated a lot more in their design and if used for the bridal party, they can be given as gifts to the bridesmaids and groomsmen and kept as a keepsake of the wedding. It is however important to ensure that you choose well when it comes to suppliers of artificial flowers because they can sometimes look quite cheap and tacky.
I know you are based in the UK, are you willing to travel or ship your designs?
Of course! One of our recent jobs was to design artificial flowers for a wedding being in Nigeria. We have done the same thing in the past for an event in Jamaica. Extremely close liaison is always needed for such jobs but distance is definitely not an issue with us!
Describe your ideal client?
Someone who does not want EVERYTHING for NOTHING. Weddings and events have become such a hot topic in the media and photo sharing networks such as Pinterest and Instagram. Potential brides are constantly bombarded with extremely extravagant images of weddings that they aspire to have. Unfortunately, many of these brides have champagne taste but coca-cola pockets. It can be very difficult to work with such clients.
What’s next for your business?
Well we will be featuring at ‘The Brides of Culture Exhibition’ and ‘The African Bridal Show’ this year which is very exciting for us. It’s so refreshing to see so many good quality companies in the industry run by people of colour and this being celebrated by these type of events. This is certainly an up and coming thing in the UK and much needed. We have also recently added an additional service where we are able to provide an ‘event coordination package’ for our clients where we handle the day’s schedule and organisation for them. We’re looking forward to the added dimension this will bring to our company.
Thanks so much to Afua for stopping by and dropping some knowledge about floral design!
